2038 PSHL Analytics Report

Article Posted 09-01-2024 14:52

The 2037-2038 PSHL regular season is coming to a close, with somewhere around fourteen games remaining for most teams. There's a few close battles for a playoff spot, but as mentioned in the stream yesterday, it is pretty clear cut this year on who will be joining the dance in the postseason. Last year, the Calgary Flames dominated the playoffs to claim the Shafer Cup. What makes a Shafer Cup Champion? Or even contender? Over the next seasons, the data from the years will be much clearer on if there is a trend or not, rather a blueprint to building a contending team. The Flames, despite holding an extremely impressive scoring ability, won the Cup with defense and the shutdown style en route to glory.

These stats and expected goals/against need to be taken with a grain of salt, it is FHM, some teams faced much tougher schedules, key players out for certain teams, it is a rough guide with what FHM gives. Last year, the Flames showed no weaknesses heading into the playoffs, holding top spots in statistical categories across the league.

Describing the graphs, it's based on expected goals for and expected goals against per game. Each team will be on the graph. If a team falls in the top right corner, they were able to post more expected goals per game than league average, and they were also able to suppress expected goals against per game better than league average. The bottom left corner is the opposite.

With the 2037 results above, we will dive right into 2038 and see what the February 1 - March 2 period gave us this season. According to the numbers, this year's Shafer Cup favorites include the San Jose Sharks, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadians, and Calgary Flames lead the way, dominating the time frame. Numerous other teams had great showings, and the images below include the 2038 team graph, the actual numbers and rank of each team this season, and each team's results from the tracking period from last year and this year.

As we gather more data through the years, these reports will be expanded (zones on graphs of contenders, playoff teams, etc. There's not enough information currently to come up with trends and consistent insights, but it will get there. If there's any questions just let me know.
