Momentum Building: Three Wins Fuel Optimism for New Jersey Devils

Article Posted 05-06-2025 14:38

After a rocky 0-5-0 start to the 2040-41 season, the tides may be turning for the New Jersey Devils, who surged to three wins in four games this past week, improving their record to 3-6-0. It wasn’t just a bounce back—it was a statement.

Leading the charge is newly acquired blueliner Sawyer Burns, the reigning Norris Trophy winner. Burns has quickly proven his worth on both ends of the ice, playing heavy minutes and making key plays that have stabilized the defense and sparked transition offense.

On the forward front, Finn Wurtemberg has caught fire, finding the back of the net in four straight games. The 23-year-old winger is showcasing elite finishing ability and playing with noticeable confidence, becoming a major threat every time he steps on the ice.

The victories came against solid competition. The Devils edged out the Sabres and Canucks before rolling over the Canadiens with a convincing performance. The lone setback came against the Blackhawks, a tight contest that highlighted some ongoing growing pains but also revealed the team’s increasing competitiveness.

There’s still a long way to go, but with the top pairing clicking and goal-scoring heating up, the pieces are starting to fall into place. If this group can keep the intensity up and clean up the special teams, they might just claw their way back into contention sooner than expected.

Stay tuned—this team isn’t done yet.

Does the Devils lose on purpose?

Article Posted 05-04-2025 14:09

The Devils have started the season with five consecutive losses, and it's hard to believe how bad they've been. First line center Elias Dahl, together with Roman Honcharenko and Colton Donaldson is obviously not a great first line, but there are no excuses for them to be -2 every game. The only bright spot has been recently acquired Sawyer Burns, and Nick Falk and Marcus Trost are always excused. But it seems the Devils are doing the best they can to land a lotto pick this year..

Devils make changes on defense

Article Posted 05-01-2025 08:22

After a missed playoff, the Devils went on to draft plenty of players in the 2040 PSHL Draft; winger Lucas Riley being the highest pick (23rd overall). With Christian Mathis being selected in the expansion draft, the Devils made some major changes on defense. Milan Sach was a major piece in a trade that brought Norris Trophy winning defenseman Sawyer Burns to New Jersey, and veterans Logan Catalano and Igor Sakiyev was both signed to one year deals to bring experience to the group. Tanner Adams was also traded from the Dallas Stars, making it four new defensemen in the three pairs this year. There are still some uncertainties about where the Devils are at the moment; they may still be a bit away from competing for a playoff spot...

Jesper Rylander wins award in the KHL

Article Posted 03-25-2025 03:15

The 7th overall draft pick in 2038, Jesper Rylander, has won the Aleksei Cherepanov Award in the KHL for being the best rookie of the 2039/40 season. Rylander put up 12 goals and 36 assists for a total of 48 points in 57 games played, continuing his success in the european leagues. Rylander, now 19 years old, is coming from excellent seasons with Rögle in the SHL, and is now making himself a name with the Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg in the KHL.

New Jersey Devils Trade Star Defenseman Dmitry Mikhaltsev to Tampa Bay Lightning in Blockbuster Deal

In a stunning move ahead of the PSHL trade deadline, the New Jersey Devils have officially parted ways with star defenseman Dmitry Mikhaltsev, sending the 26-year-old two-way blueliner to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a package of future assets.

Article Posted 02-23-2025 13:23

Mikhaltsev, a premier shutdown defenseman with strong two-way capabilities, has been a pillar on the Devils’ blue line for years. However, with only one year remaining on his contract and a lucrative payday looming, New Jersey’s front office opted to make a proactive move, securing a strong return rather than risking losing him for nothing in free agency.

In return, the Devils have acquired a highly valuable 2040 first-round pick in what scouts are calling a deep and talented draft class. Additionally, they secured a 2042 second-round pick, giving them another future asset to help retool the roster.

The deal also marks a reunion, as New Jersey brings back 21-year-old winger Matthew Thunder. Originally drafted by the Devils in the second round, Thunder was later moved to Tampa, where he continued his development. The pure goal-scoring winger has shown flashes of offensive upside, tallying 4 goals and 10 assists in 57 games this season. While he projects as a middle-six forward at the NHL level, his finishing ability makes him an intriguing piece for New Jersey moving forward.

Rounding out the trade is 18-year-old Swedish prospect Daniel Svantesson. A former sixth-round pick, Svantesson has shown promise as a versatile winger with offensive instincts. He will add depth to the Devils’ prospect pool as he continues his development overseas.

For Tampa Bay, the acquisition of Mikhaltsev is a clear statement that the Lightning are in full win-now mode. Adding one of the best two-way defensemen in the league solidifies their blue line and boosts their Stanley Cup aspirations. If they can extend Mikhaltsev beyond next season, this move could pay dividends for years to come.

Meanwhile, the Devils continue to shape their future with key draft capital and young talent, ensuring they remain competitive in the years ahead. While losing Mikhaltsev is a tough pill to swallow, this deal may prove to be a strategic win for New Jersey in the long run.

NICK FALK BREAKS RECORD

Article Posted 08-30-2024 10:09

With his goal against organizational rivals the New York Rangers, Nick Falk took over the all time record of being the best goal scorer in New Jersey Devils franchise history. Nick Falk has scored 409 goals in the red jersey, and with three more years on  his deal after this season, he will also chase Patrik Elias for the total points made by a player. The current record is at 1 025, so Falk needs to put up another 203 points to take over that as well. The closest current Devil in line for competing with Elias and Falk is Marcus Trost, with 443 assists. He needs another 167 assists to take over legend Elias in that area.
